On Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February Year 6 went on their annual excursion to Canberra. During their time there, they visited both Old and New Parliament Houses to explore the way our government is run, cast votes during their own preferential election at the Electoral Commission Office and went back in time to visit the ANZAC soldiers at the War Memorial.

The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civic and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government contributes funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards these costs.

“Canberra was so much fun and I learned a lot.  My favourite part of the Canberra excursion was when we went to the War Memorial.  We sat and listened to our guide while we looked at all the beautiful poppies placed next to the names of more than two thousand soldiers.  We also went to the Unknown Soldier’s grave and threw a poppy on the tomb.  It was an honour to do this with Heidi.  The rest of the museum was amazing and we listened to many inspiring stories” - Kara

"We drove all the way to Canberra by bus, which took four hours. But it was worth it! We visited the famous Parliament House, where we were lucky enough to see the Prime Minister in action!  We also went to the War Memorial.  I finally go to see the mind-blowing Roll of Honour. We went to other places, but if I wrote all about them it would fill up this whole page!” - Linda
